Finding your way in Laurentino: a map of the services you actually need

Arriving in a new neighborhood, especially in a city you do not know, can be disorienting. Laurentino does not have the tourist infrastructure of the historic center where every corner has a minimarket, a bar, a restaurant. Here things work differently: all the services are there, but you need to know where to find them.

This guide comes from the direct experience of someone who has been hosting tourists in Laurentino for years. The questions are always the same: where can I buy water? Is there a pharmacy nearby? Where can I have breakfast? Can I do laundry? Answering these questions once and for all will save you precious time in the first days of your stay.

Groceries and daily shopping: strategies to avoid spending a fortune

Grocery shopping is one of the most underestimated items in the travel budget. Those staying in a hotel have no choice: breakfast included or the bar downstairs at tourist prices. Those who choose an apartment in Laurentino can be smart and save significant amounts.

Supermarkets: three options for three different philosophies

Conad at via Laurentina 673 is the go-to supermarket. Large, well-stocked, open until 9:00 PM on weekdays. Here you will find the fresh counter with buffalo mozzarella, hand-sliced prosciutto, seasonal vegetables. The deli counter also prepares ready-made pasta dishes to take away: carbonara, amatriciana, cacio e pepe at 6-8 euros for a generous portion.

MD Discount at via di Tor Pagnotta 156 sacrifices variety but slashes prices. Store-brand labels, large-format packages, no-frills shelves. Perfect for stocking the pantry: pasta (0.60 euros per kg), tomato sauce (0.40 euros per bottle), water (0.15 euros per liter). If you cook often in the apartment, a basic grocery shop at MD costs about half as much as at Conad.

Todis at via Laurentina 555 sits in the middle: competitive prices, acceptable quality, smaller size. Handy for quick purchases when you are missing something and do not want to tackle the giant Conad.

Street market: Tuesday and Friday mornings

Via di Trigoria transforms twice a week into a fruit and vegetable market. The stalls set up around 7:30 AM and pack up after 1:00 PM. Producers from the Castelli Romani area bring seasonal fruit and vegetables at prices that make even discount stores seem expensive.

In June you will find cherries at 3 euros per kilo (in supermarkets they cost 8-10 euros), strawberries at 2.50 euros, zucchini at 1.50 euros. In August peaches, apricots, San Marzano tomatoes bursting with flavor. In October table grapes, figs, porcini mushrooms.

The neighborhood's elderly residents arrive at 8:00 AM sharp and pick the best produce. You are not an expert, so apply this strategy: watch what the locals buy and get the same things. If the woman with the shopping bag buys tomatoes from the left stall and skips the one on the right, there is a reason.

Artisan bakeries: bread that lasts three days

The bakery at via Basilio Bricci 118 starts baking bread at 6:00 AM. The smell fills the street and makes you hungry even if you just had breakfast. Classic Roman bread (cylindrical shape, crispy crust, dense crumb) costs 3.50 euros per kilo and keeps for three days without going rubbery.

White pizza comes out of the oven every hour. Crispy, perfectly oiled, great to eat warm while walking or to fill with mortadella for a quick sandwich. It costs 2 euros per 100 grams, a 200-gram piece is a sufficient lunch.

Supplì (fried rice balls with meat sauce and melted mozzarella in the center) are the Roman specialty par excellence. Here they make them fist-sized, 1.80 euros each, they burn your fingers for the first five minutes but you cannot resist waiting for them to cool down.

Night minimarkets: when everything else is closed

The minimarket on via Laurentina 520 stays open until 11:00 PM every day, Sundays included. Prices are slightly higher than the supermarket but infinitely lower than the minimarkets in the historic center. If at 10:00 PM you realize you have run out of milk for breakfast, here you will find it for 1.50 euros instead of the 3 euros you would pay near the Colosseum.

Neighborhood dining: where real Romans eat

Laurentino is not a gastronomic area. You will not find starred restaurants or trendy venues. You will find places where residents eat regularly, with prices to match.

Unpretentious trattorias with substance

Da Armando at via di Trigoria 145 serves traditional Roman cuisine. The menu has not changed in thirty years: Thursday gnocchi, Friday salt cod, Saturday tripe. If you do not know these dishes, now is the time to try them. Roman-style tripe (beef stomach stewed with tomato and pecorino) frightens tourists but wins over anyone who dares to taste it.

Fixed lunch menu: 13 euros all-inclusive. Generous first course, main with side dish, half liter of house wine, water, coffee. Portions sized for a construction worker, so do not order a starter unless you are starving.

La Vecchia Hostaria at via Laurentina 688 raises the level slightly. Cloth tablecloths, printed menu, a la carte prices. Carbonara 12 euros, scottadito lamb chops 16 euros, artichokes alla giudia 10 euros. Better quality than Da Armando, but you lose the spartan atmosphere of the working-class trattoria.

Book for Saturday evening, especially if you are a group. During the week you always find a table, but on weekends neighborhood Romans fill up the seats.

Pizza al taglio: a quick lunch for under 5 euros

Pizza Napoli Express on via di Tor Pagnotta is the neighborhood institution. Roman-style pizza al pala (thin and crispy, not Neapolitan thick and soft) with endless varieties. Plain white pizza costs 1.20 euros per 100 grams, topped varieties 1.60-2 euros.

A 250-gram piece (about two generous slices) solves lunch for 3-4 euros. You eat standing at the counter or take it away and have lunch in the park or in your apartment.

Stuffed focaccia (with mortadella, with sausage and friarielli, with porchetta) costs 4-5 euros and is a complete meal. Bear in mind it is heavy: if at 3:00 PM you need to walk for hours through museums and monuments, skip it or you will fall asleep on your feet.

Rotisseries for a quick dinner

Rosticceria Flaminio at via Laurentina 600 makes roast chicken properly. They roast continuously so it is always fresh, crispy skin, juicy meat. Half a chicken costs 5 euros, whole 9 euros. Add roasted potatoes (3 euros per kg) and you have a generous dinner for 2-3 people for 15 euros total.

Porchetta in slices (8 euros per 100 grams) is perfect for sandwiches or to eat directly by hand. Supplì are larger than those from the bakery and cost 2 euros each.

On Sunday mornings Romans queue to take home a ready-made lunch. If you want to avoid the wait, go Saturday afternoon.

Breakfast bars: the Italian custom you must follow

Italian bars work differently from Starbucks. You approach the counter, order, consume standing up, pay, leave. All in five minutes. If you sit at a table the price doubles and you have to wait for table service.

Bar Sport on via Basilio Bricci opens at 6:00 AM and is already full of workers grabbing a coffee before going to work. Cappuccino and croissant at the counter: 2.30 euros. Same service at the table: 4.50 euros. Your choice.

Croissants arrive fresh from the bakery at 7:00 AM. The early morning ones are still warm. Classic flavors: plain (just pastry dough), cream, jam, chocolate, cream and cherry.

Italian coffee is a short espresso. If you want something similar to an American coffee ask for a "caffè lungo" (espresso with more water) or a "caffè americano" (espresso extended with hot water on the side). But be prepared for the barista's look of mild disdain.

Health and wellness: pharmacies, doctors, emergencies

Health does not take a vacation. Headaches, sunburn, stomach issues from a change in diet: it is better to know where to go before you need it.

Neighborhood pharmacies: hours and services

Farmacia Laurentino at via di Trigoria 49 is the most complete. Professional staff, some speak English, well-stocked over-the-counter section. Continuous hours 8:30 AM-8:00 PM Monday through Saturday.

Here you will find everything you need for minor health issues: pain relievers, anti-inflammatories, probiotics, sunburn creams, bandages, antiseptics, thermometers. Also personal hygiene products, cosmetics, dietary supplements.

Farmacia Comunale at via Laurentina 710 has slightly lower prices (being municipal) but a reduced range. Split hours: 9:00 AM-1:00 PM and 4:00 PM-7:30 PM.

Night and holiday duty

Municipio IX of Rome organizes nighttime and holiday pharmacy duty. The duty changes weekly, so check the Federfarma Roma website or call the toll-free number 800 420 707.

The nearest night-duty pharmacy to Laurentino is usually the one in Torrino or Spinaceto, reachable in 10-15 minutes by car. At night the pharmacy bell activates the pharmacist who serves you through the night window.

Night and holiday prices include a 2-euro surcharge per prescription.

When you need a doctor

For Italian tourists with a health insurance card: the family doctor does not operate outside your own region, but you can access the after-hours clinic (continuità assistenziale) by showing your health card. The call and visit are usually free, while prescribed medications may require only the standard co-pay.

After-hours clinic Municipio IX: tel. 06 570600. Active from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM on weekdays, 24 hours on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

For foreign tourists with travel health insurance: many insurers have agreements with private clinics in Rome. Check your insurance policy for which affiliated facilities you can use without paying upfront.

Emergency room: for real emergencies

The nearest hospital to Laurentino is Sant'Eugenio at piazzale dell'Umanesimo (EUR). Emergency room always open, reachable in 10 minutes by car or 20 minutes by bus 765.

Emergency rooms in Italy work with color codes: white (non-urgent, very long wait), green (minor urgency, average wait), yellow (medium urgency, short wait), red (emergency, immediate access).

If you have a stomachache, go to a doctor or pharmacy, not the emergency room. If you have difficulty breathing, intense chest pain, or head trauma, call 112 (single emergency number) and go to the emergency room.

Connectivity and communications: WiFi, SIM cards, internet

Staying connected while traveling is now essential. Maps, translators, online bookings, communicating with family and friends: you need reliable internet.

WiFi in MiTuCasa apartments

All apartments have high-speed fiber optic connection. Password provided at check-in, coverage in all rooms, no data limits. You can work remotely, make video calls, download movies, without problems.

Typical speed is 100-200 Mbps download, sufficient for any use. If you work with large files or professional video calls, check the speed before booking.

Italian SIM cards for tourists

If you need internet outside the apartment, you have two options: roaming with your foreign SIM or an Italian prepaid SIM.

Roaming within the European Union is included at no extra cost for EU residents. If you have a German, French, or Spanish SIM, you use your data in Italy without paying extra.

Non-European tourists pay steep roaming rates. It is better to buy an Italian prepaid SIM: 15 euros for 20-30 GB valid for one month. You can find them at TIM, Vodafone, WindTre stores in the center (not in Laurentino, you need to go to EUR or downtown).

A passport is required to register the SIM. Activation is immediate, and you can top it up at any tobacco shop.

Public WiFi in Rome

The metro has free WiFi at all stations, but it works poorly and requires registration every time. Better to use your SIM's data. Many bars offer WiFi to customers. Order a coffee, ask for the password, use the internet. The etiquette is to consume something if you stay more than 15 minutes.

Banking services and money management

We already covered ATMs and cards in the first article; here we go deeper into practical aspects that come up during the stay.

Withdrawing cash without getting fleeced

The Unicredit, Intesa Sanpaolo, and Banco BPM ATMs along via Laurentina do not charge their own fees. The fee is applied by YOUR bank, not the Italian bank's machine.

Before you leave, check with your bank how much it costs to withdraw abroad. Some banks have agreements with international networks and charge nothing; others hit you with 5 euros flat plus 2% on the amount.

Smart strategy: withdraw a large amount once instead of many small withdrawals. If the fee is 5 euros flat, it is better to withdraw 500 euros once (1% commission) than 100 euros five times (5% commission each time).

Changing cash: where and how

If you arrive with dollars, pounds, yen, Swiss francs and need to exchange them into euros, do NOT go to the exchange offices in the historic center. Commissions of 10-15%, terrible exchange rates, legalized rip-off.

MiTuCasa offers a currency exchange service to guests. Interbank exchange rates (the real ones you see on Google), minimal 2% commission. If you need to change 500 dollars, you save 50-60 euros compared to tourist offices.

Alternative: withdraw euros directly from the ATM with your card. The exchange rate applied by the Visa/Mastercard network is always better than that of physical exchange offices.

Paying by card: does it work everywhere?

Since 2020 Italian law requires businesses to accept electronic payments. In practice 95% of shops and restaurants accept cards without problems, even for small amounts.

Some exceptions: street markets (vendors prefer cash), tiny bars (they ask for a minimum of 5 euros for card), old-school taxis, where card payments may be discouraged..

Contactless cards work for amounts up to 50 euros without a PIN. Above 50 euros you need to enter your PIN.

Tobacco shops: the Italian all-in-one service

Italian tobacco shops are a unique institution. They sell cigarettes but also dozens of other essential services.

• CIS (weekly pass): 24 euros, valid 7 days

The tobacco shop at via Laurentina 620 is the best-stocked and has extended hours: 7:00 AM-8:00 PM every day. Other tobacco shops close on Sunday or have reduced hours.

Phone top-ups and prepaid cards

You can top up any Italian mobile operator (TIM, Vodafone, WindTre, Iliad) and many prepaid cards (Postepay, PayPal, etc.). Minimal or no commission.

Bill and stamp payments

If you need to pay a fine, a bill, or buy a revenue stamp (for official documents), the tobacco shop handles everything. Lottomatica service for pre-filled payment slips, cash or card payment.

Post office and shipping

Poste Italiane at via di Tor Pagnotta 174 handles mail, parcels, and banking operations. Hours: 8:20 AM-1:35 PM Monday through Friday, 8:20 AM-12:35 PM on Saturday.

Sending postcards and parcels

• Stamp for postcard within Italy: 1.30 euros
• Stamp for postcard to Europe: 2.80 euros
• Stamp for postcard outside Europe: 3.20 euros

You can buy stamps at the post office or at tobacco shops. Yellow mailboxes are scattered around the neighborhood, with one collection per day. For parcels you have several options: standard mail (cheap but slow), priority mail (more expensive but faster), registered mail (with proof of delivery). Prices depend on weight and destination.

Poste Italiane banking services

If you have a Postepay or BancoPosta account you can carry out banking operations at the post office: withdrawals, deposits, transfers, top-ups. Also bill and fine payments. Post office queues are legendary. Strategy to avoid them: arrive at 8:20 AM when it opens or after 12:00 PM when the rush subsides. Tuesday and Thursday are the quietest days, Monday and Friday the worst.

Laundromats and laundry care

MiTuCasa apartments all have a washing machine, so you do not need external laundromats. But knowing the available options is useful.

Using the apartment's washing machine

Italian washing machines have different programs from American or Asian ones. The standard cycle takes 2 hours (not 30 minutes like in the US). The reason: energy saving - Italian washing machines use less water and less electricity but take longer.

Detergent: one pod or 60ml of liquid detergent. Never fill the drawer to the brim or the machine will produce excessive foam and stop. Drying: hang clothes on the balcony or on the clothes rack. Tumble dryers are rare in Italy because the summer sun dries everything in 2-3 hours.

Self-service laundromats as an alternative

The automatic laundromat at via di Trigoria 88 operates with coins or tokens. Machines for 6, 8, 10 kg loads. Costs: 5-7 euros per wash, 2 euros per 15 minutes of drying. Useful if you have accumulated a lot of laundry and do not want to run three loads in the apartment, or if you need to wash blankets or duvets that do not fit in a home machine.

Full-service laundries

Lavanderia Express at via Laurentina 652 offers full service: drop off your laundry, pick it up washed, dried, ironed and folded. Return in 24-48 hours. Cost: 18-20 euros for 5 kg. Convenient for those who do not want to waste time or have delicate garments requiring special care.

Personal care: hair salons, beauticians, barbers

During a long stay you might need a haircut, a beard trim, or a manicure.

Affordable barbers

Barbiere Gino on via Basilio Bricci is an old-style shop. Leather chair, straight razor, radio broadcasting soccer matches. Men's cut 12 euros, beard 5 euros, cut plus beard 15 euros. No appointment, you arrive and wait your turn seated reading La Gazzetta dello Sport. Average time: 15 minutes for a cut, 25 minutes with beard.

Women's hair salons

Salone Carla at via di Trigoria 110 works by appointment. Honest prices for Rome: cut 28 euros, blowout 18 euros, color 45-65 euros depending on length. Friendly staff, clean environment, professional products. You need to book at least one day in advance, especially on Saturday.

Beauty centers

Estetica Daniela at via Laurentina 590 offers manicure, pedicure, waxing, facial treatments. Prices: manicure 15 euros, pedicure 25 euros, leg waxing 25 euros. Average quality, nothing luxurious but good work.

Pet services

Traveling with dogs or cats requires organization. Laurentino is pet-friendly and offers the necessary services.

Veterinarians and clinics

Clinica Veterinaria Girasole at via Laurentina 580 offers outpatient visits, vaccinations, lab tests, and minor procedures. Hours: 9:00 AM-1:00 PM and 3:00 PM-7:00 PM Monday through Friday, Saturday mornings only. Visit cost: 40-50 euros. Vaccinations: 30-40 euros depending on type. Booking required, especially for specialist visits.

For nighttime emergencies: Clinica Veterinaria 24 ore EUR at viale dell'Umanesimo 30, always open. Higher costs (emergency visit 80-100 euros) but full availability.

Pet stores

Arcaplanet at via Laurentina 750 sells food, accessories, toys, and hygiene products for dogs and cats. Prices in line with major retailers, frequent promotions. If you have run out of kibble or need a new bowl, you will find everything here. Helpful staff who advise on products suited to your animal.

Green areas for dogs

Parco Caduti per la Resistenza has a fenced dog area of about 2,000 sq meters. Your dog can run freely off-leash, socialize with other dogs, and get exercise. Area rules: pick up waste (bags provided), keep your animal under control, avoid aggressive dogs. Hours: always open from dawn to dusk. Other spaces where you can walk your dog on a leash: public gardens on via Basilio Bricci, Parco Laurentino on via di Trigoria, lawn along via Laurentina.

Sports and leisure

For those who do not want to skip training or are looking for recreational activities, Laurentino offers several options.

Gyms with daily passes

FitActive at via di Trigoria 95 allows single-day entry at 10 euros. Modern weight room, cardio area, clean locker rooms with showers. Hours: 6:30 AM-10:30 PM Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-1:00 PM Saturday and Sunday. Bring your own towel and lock, these are not provided. Sports clothing is required (no jeans or street shoes).

Public swimming pool

Piscina Laurentino at via di Tor Pagnotta offers single-entry for 7 euros for 2 hours. 25-meter pool, 6 lanes, water maintained at 27 degrees. Hours: 7:00 AM-9:00 PM weekdays, 9:00 AM-6:00 PM weekends. Swim cap required, available at reception for 3 euros. If you swim regularly, bring your own.

After hours of tourist walking, swimming for half an hour relaxes the muscles and relieves tension.

Tennis and five-a-side soccer courts

Centro Sportivo Laurentino at via Caduti per la Resistenza has two clay tennis courts (15 euros per hour) and a synthetic grass five-a-side soccer field (40 euros per hour). Booking required, phone 06 5071234. Rental does not include balls or rackets, bring your own.

Parks for jogging and walking

The route preferred by neighborhood runners starts from Parco Caduti per la Resistenza, follows via Laurentina southward, reaches Parco di Tor Pagnotta, and returns. Total 5 km, flat terrain, some shaded stretches under pine trees. Early morning (6:30-8:00 AM) you will find many local runners. In the evening after 7:00 PM the park fills up with families bringing children to play.

Libraries, public WiFi, workspaces

Biblioteca Comunale Laurentino at via Laurentina 546 offers free services to everyone: fast WiFi, computer stations, study rooms, newspapers and magazines, book lending. Hours: 9:00 AM-7:00 PM Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 AM-2:00 PM Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday.

No membership card needed to use WiFi and study rooms; a card is required to borrow books (but tourists rarely register for just a few days). The library is frequented by university students who live in the area. Quiet environment, air conditioning, spacious tables. Perfect if you need to work on your laptop or study and prefer to get out of the apartment.
